Storage Services for Paper Documents

ITS Document Imaging Services can retain your original hard copy documents if that is one of your business requirements.

The following table provides estimates of the space taken up by paper copies of documents. You can use it to determine how many sheets of paper you are storing or to estimate how many pages you need to scan.

Type of Storage
Estimated Number of Pages
Storage Box (10” x 12” x 15”) 2,000 to 2,500 pages
Vertical File Drawer 3,500 to 4,000 pages
Lateral File Drawer 4,500 to 5,000 pages
Open Shelving 1,500 pages per linear foot
Unbound Paper 100 to 125 pages per inch

Paper documents are held in a secure storage environment at a satellite location. At the end of the retention period that you have arranged with ITS, documents are destroyed by methods complying with your security requirements.

ITS Document Imaging Services procedures comply with Federal mandates, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Safeguard Rule of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) throughout the documents’ lifecycles.

To discuss your unit's document storage needs, send an e-mail to doc.image.request@umich.edu.
