Technical Infrastructure Operations (TIO)

TIO is the primary technical group within MAIS with responsibility for day-to-day operations and for setting the technical direction for systems managed by MAIS.

On This Page:

TIO Groups

  • Application Infrastructure Group manages client and server software components used by MAIS applications, which includes installation, configuration, maintenance and support. This group also manages integration architecture and provides upgrade support for M-Pathways systems.
  • Business & Finance Information Technology (BFIT): This group manages the local area network and desktop infrastructure for Business & Finance. BFIT also coordinates hardware standards and software standards, provides "tier 2" support to the B&F system administrators, and acts as the B&F liaison to ITCS and the rest of campus for division-wide network and desktop issues. Additionally, BFIT provides help desk support to several Business & Finance groups and manages the document image storage system used by Accounts Payable, Financial Operations, and the Office of Development.
  • Database Administration & Application Tuning Group provides database administration and support for all MAIS server and mainframe database systems and application tuning support for MAIS client/server systems. Responsibilities of the database administrators (DBAs) include database planning, design, creation, backup and recovery, tuning, copying, destroying, sizing, upgrading and troubleshooting as well as installation and maintenance of database management system software. Responsibilities of the Application Tuning team include stress testing and tuning of database applications, SQL query tuning, consulting on application design in terms of performance, monitoring and performance support of production applications, and table and index sizing and DDL maintenance in the U-M Data Warehouse environment.
  • Operations Group manages the hardware, software, space, networking, and physical access-control infrastructure services for the mainframe and the servers; monitors and handles input and output for scheduled jobs and tape management; supports job delivery service to various departments and locations.
  • Security and Network Services Group plans, coordinates, and operates security and network services for MAIS enterprise and desktop environments. (More information is in the Security services section.)
  • Systems Support Group supports UNIX and mainframe hardware, operating system, and system-level components of MAIS systems. This responsibility covers installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating systems for all server environments. Mainframe support covers those areas plus support for application infrastructure components.
  • Windows Enterprise Systems (WES) supports hardware, operating system, and all software infrastructures for MAIS Windows-based enterprise systems.
