MAIS Job Description/Classification Study

An important achievement for MAIS in 2000-2001 was the design and implementation of a job classification system and market-competitive compensation program. Results of the project established a foundation on which a variety of employee and organizational programs are to be built. The new job classification system also allowed MAIS to set expectations for individual job performance and productivity, career paths, job rotation opportunities, and staff training and development.
MAIS Compensation Philosophy

Redesign of Performance Management Systems

MAIS HR rolled out a newly designed Performance Management Program in October 2001. Comprised primarily of Work Plans and Coaching and Feedback sessions in alignment with unit, division, organizational and University-wide critical initiatives, MAIS leadership and staff anticipate enhanced employee performance, improved communication, increased employee satisfaction, and stronger team cohesion.

Anticipated Additional Projects

As MAIS continues to encourage a culture of high quality work performance while empowering staff and leadership to approach opportunities openly with calculated risks and innovation, future human resource program designs include:

  • Identification of Organizational and Job Family Competencies
  • Leadership Development
  • Career Development
  • Succession Planning

In these and other efforts, MAIS lives its valuing of lifelong learning, integrity, professional ethics, and diversity of ideas, opinions, and beliefs.

Staff Recognition

MAIS staff who achieve service year milestones with the University are honored at an annual Employee Recognition Luncheon at the Michigan League.

New Employee Orientation

New employees can be compared to immigrants, says Howard Klein, assistant professor of management and human resources at Ohio State University. "They need to learn the history, rules, people, language, and culture, as well as performance expectations." The orientation of a new staff member to MAIS includes, but is not limited to, an overview of the organization, history of M-Pathways, desktop and network orientation, access and compliance, introduction to performance management and a tour of MAIS facilities. Our half-day orientation's goal is to help new employees begin to feel accepted, appreciated and acknowledged.

Annual "Tailgate"

Located at the corner of Hoover and Greene, in the shadow of the University of Michigan football stadium, MAIS staff kick-off the football season in "MAIS 'n Blue" style with an annual "tailgate" potluck.

Health Classes

As an organization, MAIS values a balance between professional and personal lives. To this end, and in collaboration with M-Fit and Weight Watchers, MAIS offers a variety of classes and seminars in the Administrative Services Building. Classes have included Body Sculpting, Don't Sweat It, Cardio Sculpting and Weight Watchers At Work. In addition, MAIS staff volunteer to lead group walking tours twice a week at lunchtime. Brown Bag seminars on various topics are held intermittently during the year.

Tuition Reimbursement

MAIS supports the University's Tuition Support Program providing financial assistance to eligible staff members for courses taken for credit and successfully passed at accredited institutions.

Holiday Party

In the holiday spirit, each year MAIS celebrates the holiday season by sponsoring three charitable organizations in addition to hosting an all MAIS staff breakfast and entertainment program at the Michigan Union.

Annual All Staff Meeting

The mission of MAIS is to partner with the University community by providing leadership in enterprise-wide administrative information services and systems to effectively and efficiently support the University's operations and strategic directions. MAIS staff meet on an annual basis to maintain a healthy dialogue while revisiting and reaffirming its mission. More frequent staff meetings are held within each MAIS division.

Take Your Child to Work Day Workshop

Imagine a day when girls and boys are working everywhere - conducting orchestras; creating laws, fighting fires, researching whales, designing Web sites, the possibilities are endless. Annually, MAIS celebrates Take Your Children to Work Day in April. In the past, workshop topics included computer technology, skydiving, technology in aviation, music, athletics, dog training, culinary arts, and the college experience.
